Special constable
nursing burns after stove flung at her. A female special
constable is nursing severe burn injuries about the body
at the Georgetown Hospital following a confrontation with
her reputed husband on Monday morning.
Thandy Nelson of Haslington, East Coast Demerara was burnt
after her reputed husband allegedly flung a lighted kerosene
stove at her sometime around 9 am.
Speaking with Stabroek News yesterday from her hospital
bed Nelson said she had returned home after visiting the
Probation Office earlier that morning and found her reputed
husband in a foul mood. The man was upset because Nelson
had taken $1,000 from his pants pocket while he was asleep.
A heated argument then ensued between the two. Nelson related
that she proceeded upstairs and was followed by the man
who insisted she return his money so he could travel to
Georgetown and report for duty.
According to Nelson she had offered him $500, all that was
left of the money and promised to get the other $500 by
afternoon. The man went to the stove which was lit at the
time and summoned Nelson. The woman said as she approached
her reputed husband, he grabbed the stove and threw it at
her.
“I couldn’t run or anything, all I know is me
whole body ketch afire,” Nelson said. The woman screamed
for sometime until relatives rushed to her aid and doused
the flames. Nelson was later transported to the Georgetown
Hospital and admitted to the Burn Care Unit.
The mother of three told this newspaper she has endured
eight years of various types of abuse. Nelson pointed out
that although she lives with the man, he hardly maintains
the children. Her monthly salary goes towards bills, clothes,
food, school and transportation, among other things |
